Steve Jewell is the Risk Management Practice Leader for Asset Performance Networks. A chartered process engineer with over 34 years of experience in the oil, gas, petrochemical, and alternative energy businesses, Steve brings an unprecedented understanding of risk and risk management to his current position.

In his role with AP-Networks, Steve has conducted Risk Workshops across the globe for both upstream and downstream organizations. He led the development of AP-Networks’ Cost Estimate Risk Analysis (CERA) and Schedule Estimate Risk Analysis (SERA) services, both of which he now administers to clients. Additionally, Steve is engaged in ongoing risk management support for a major energy company.

Prior to joining AP-Networks, Steve was the Senior Risk Advisor at BP, where he led the implementation of a corporate risk system. During his more than 3 decades with the company, Steve held a number of roles at operating sites, on major projects, and in head office. Following 5 years as a process engineer in the manufacture of polymers, he worked as an estimator on refinery projects before spending several years as a project engineer, planner, cost engineer, and project controls manager on offshore and corporate projects. He then moved to a central role reviewing estimates and schedules for projects seeking capital sanction, where he began to focus on cost & schedule risk analysis. He developed tools and methodologies that were used by the projects community across the entire company before heading up a team that led and supported the broader risk management activities throughout the enterprise.

Steve has facilitated risk workshops for more than US $500 billion worth of projects across operating assets and corporate functions for a wide range of customers worldwide. A thought leader in risk management, he has created risk management policies and procedures at corporate and project levels, and has developed tools to support these processes. Designed to improve project performance, these tools include a project cost & schedule database, a risk management gap assessment tool, and an enterprise risk management system used on projects, operating assets, corporate functions, and business units. He also developed risk curriculum for delivery across BP in support of their project management academy, as well as a number of specialist courses.

Steve regularly delivers training courses to a wide variety of audiences including senior leadership. Since 1998, he has lectured in risk management, estimating, and cost & schedule risk analysis on a regular basis at a number of renowned universities in the UK, USA, and Russia.

Steve holds a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Manchester, UK.
