John Zhao is a Subject Matter Expert with Asset Performance Canada, specializing in risk management and capital projects. John’s work spans the oil sands, chemical, petrochemical, construction, and refining industries. Throughout his career, he has facilitated over 100 risk workshops.

John’s experience encompasses many large-scale projects, including numerous projects paired with complex turnaround events. His diverse professional background includes field engineering for commercial and heavy industrial projects with general contractors in the Middle East; field coordination, cost engineering, and contract management with world-renowned EPC firms in Canada; project management office governance; development and facilitation of qualitative risk processes and workshops; and quantitative cost and schedule risk analysis with major owner companies in Canada, the USA, and Europe. Throughout his career, John’s leadership ability and proficiency at liaising with multidisciplinary groups has helped organizations assess and address risk to successfully deliver competitive cost and schedule outcomes on their major projects.

John holds a MSc. in Construction Management and a BSc. in Building Design and Management, both from Northumbria University. He has been a guest speaker in the MBA program at the University of Calgary, and at Mont Royal University for Continued Education and SAIT for BSc. classes. He also runs project risk management skills and knowledge training classes for AACE. John has presented on project risk management at various conferences throughout Abu Dhabi, Miami, London, Las Vegas, Denver, New Orleans, Ontario, Calgary, and Beijing.
